In the village square of our ancestors, no one built alone. When the roof of a neighbor’s obi needed thatching, hands appeared from every compound. When the harvest came, the barns of the widow were filled before the celebratory drums began. This is Nma Ala Igbo — the beauty of our land, measured not in what we possess, but in what we share.

Our language, once spoken in the evening shadows of udala trees, now flickers like a lamp in the wind. Our proverbs — those vessels of wisdom that taught us that “when one finger picks oil, it soils the whole hand” — grow silent in the mouths of our children. Our masquerades, our Ọfala festivals, the very rhythm of the ogene that once made the earth tremble with identity… these treasures do not preserve themselves.
